War Declared! Salvation Army Marches in to Appleton - First 100 Years
April 1917 ~ First corps officers march in. Captain Griselda "Della" Rapson assisted by Captain Lilly Paul and later Lieutenant Schey (August 1917). First earliest address of the Corps (June 1918) was located at 1091 College Avenue.
April 6, 1917 ~ the United States Congress declared war upon the German Empire; on April 2, President Woodrow Wilson had asked a special joint session of Congress for this declaration. Appleton's citizen soldiers march off to the "Great War" the "war to end all wars."
February 10, 1918 ~ Captain Della Rapson is “farewelled” from Appleton, WI after being accepted for “War Service in France” to become one of the original “Doughnut Lassies” serving American troops and boards an ocean liner bound for Europe.
